100 Club AGM Marathon

Two Tewkesbury RC marathon regulars, Angie Sadler and Phillip Howells, who are also members of the 100 Marathon Club, travelled to Essex on a cold clear day to compete in the 100 Marathon Club AGM Marathon, held, strangely enough, on the morning before the club’s annual general meeting when the great and the good of the club gathered to review the latest year of what is an increasing rate of membership and 100 marathon club achievements. The event was very well organised by running group Sikhs in the City, featuring an innovative chip timing system with a big screen showing individual times as we completed each lap and hot samosas served throughout to help keep us warm. The full Sikh hospitality ended with a bumper meal after the AGM.

It was estimated that the, just-over 100 runner field represented an astonishing 18,000 marathons completed between them, an average of 170ish marathons each! Both the Tewkesbury runners are above this average, with Angie now on 185 marathons and Phillip on 248.

The race was held over 21 laps of a testing 2.4km circuit with a short hill followed by a cold headwind stretch which caught a lot out on its accumulative effects. Many found their times were generally slower than expected beforehand. Not for Angie and Phillip though, since they both paced themselves well to finish in more or less expected times. Angie excelled as usual to finish as first lady and in 14th position overall with a time of 3-39-35. Phillip was very satisfied with a close sub-5.15 time of 5-14-47 and 74th place from 99 finishers. He was also first V70+ (out of 2!). Angie was presented with her 1st lady prize after the event by Club President Roger Biggs.
